How often should I take a reading from the sensor?

Our Sense-2 and Sense-3 kits are pre-set to take a reading from the sensor at a standard time interval. Both kits enable you to set alert and alarm levels for oil condition and offer a customisable solution for oil condition monitoring.

For most applications where you are integrating the sensor into your own system (such as local displays, data loggers or a PLC or SCADA etc...), we recommend taking a reading every 5 to 15 minutes.

If you are integrating the sensor into your own system we have provided a calculation for rate of change (RoC) and a range of algorithms to help you to spot anomalies in the oil behaviour, alerting you to potential issues or breakdown of the asset, so you can pre-empt and prevent a catastrophic failure.

Continued monitoring of the oil will enable you to trace the degradation of the oil until it is no longer fit for purpose, using the oil for more of its useable life. We provide a standard set of oil wear limits to use, or you can create your own limits through careful analysis of the oil condition. In most cases using a Tan Delta sensor can extend your service interval by at least 30%.

    • Can the sensor detect particles?

Yes, the sensor will detect particles, both ferrous and non-ferrous. Particles typically show up as a change in the oil behaviour, often as disrupted data which is not directly related to changes in the oil temperature. The Sense-2 display has ...
    • How does the sensor work?

The sensor measures complex permittivity (which is a ratio between conductance and capacitance). The sensor does this does this by introducing energy into the fluid via a high frequency AC waveform Sensor induces energy into the fluid via a HF AC ...
    • Does the sensor need to be in the oil flow?

The sensor does not need to be in the direct flow of oil, provided there is turnover of oil (oil is moving). The sensor nose must remain immersed in oil at all times however to provide an accurate reading. The sensor nose must be fully immersed in ...

    • What orientation does the sensor need to be installed in?

The sensor will work in any orientation, however "nose up" should be avoided as any particles in the oil may collect around the sensor head and give an incorrect reading. "Nose up" installations should be avoided where possible and are not suitable ...
